Experts uncover four parallel stories of extraordinary curiosities once buried in the world's deserts — from crocodile mummies on the Nile and ancient geoglyphs in the Australian outback to WWII aircraft in the Sahara and Roman ruins submerged off Tunisia.
Secrets in the Sand asks what the desert chooses to bury and what it eventually gives back. Each episode follows four simultaneous investigations across the globe — archaeologists, historians, and engineers piecing together civilisations from what the sand preserved. Season 2 pushed into new territory: a Saharan WWII aircraft graveyard, underwater Roman ruins off the Tunisian coast, moving rocks in Death Valley, and ancient mummy caches along the Nile.
Our VFX task was photorealistic reconstruction. When the physical evidence was fragmentary — a crumbling wall, a partial artefact, an aerial survey of eroded markings — CG completed the picture. We worked directly with the series' archaeologists to ensure every reconstruction was defensible: right architecture, right materials, right light for the period and geography.
The series aired on National Geographic and Discovery from 2023 through 2025, spanning two seasons and fourteen episodes, with a 6.2 IMDb rating. The visual reconstruction sequences consistently drew praise as the standout element of each episode.
